A lovely read. These days I feel content in both. Happy to have each and every day. Truth be told, it feels good watching more light tagged onto each morning and evening. Not sure about today, but there has been no sunshine in Aberdeen since January 21st. So looking forward to less grey skies.
One of the things I miss most about being a northeasterner is cold, grey winters. It shouldn't be 65 and sunny on a January day. but here in North Carolina, it too often is. And, like anything else, the absence of a warm sun makes us appreciate it that much more. Anyone who's spent more than a little time in Southern California might agree.
Do I like winter or summer? I grew up in Bombay, so no surprises that it's summer. But I have been getting a bit more used to winter, now that I've discovered the heated outdoor swimming pool at the local Y.
Right now it’s 11 degrees in Baltimore, and 32 degrees in my favorite town in Iceland, Selfoss. My fingers stuck to the metal handle on my front door this morning . I purchased three 40 pound bags of birdseed because they can’t find food in the ice-covered snow. But we did spend hours in front of the fire, cozy with dogs and cat. The ice-snow on our vast slope of lawn looks like a crystal lake. But it’s fucking cold. So there’s that.
Brilliant writing about winter. I struggle to write about the seasons, so I enjoy seeing how other writers pull it off. Or, in your case, how you put it on. I have been on the road full-time in a mini-campervan for three and a half years, with no heat or AC, so I have to run away to Mexico when winter arrives in the US to survive. A new phrase I love for fall-winter is "the season of the sticks."
